Distance: 14,3 km
A four to five-hour day hike from Stafafell will take you to Hvannagil, a colourful rhyolite canyon on the eastern bank of the river Jökulsá í Lóni. The path from Stafafell to the edge of the canyon is marked by wooden sticks (but some of them are missing...). The hike starts behind the guesthouse and the church. A gravel road leads up to a small hen house. From there, follow the sheep track to the top of the hill, climb the fence and continue to follow the sheep tracks until you reach the beautiful Hvannagil (="angelica canyon"). Follow the steep path leading down into the canyon and then walk down by the river to the mouth of the canyon. Probably you will have to cross the river once or twice. Then, follow the gravel road through the recreational area along the Jökulsá river back to Stafafell.
